Bandipur Wildlife Tour

Gaur, elephants, and tigers in the heart of the Nilgiri biosphere

Overview

Why Visit

Bandipur National Park in Karnataka forms the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — one of the largest contiguous protected forest areas in Asia, shared with Nagarhole, Mudumalai, and Wayanad. The park's dry deciduous forests — teak, rosewood, and sandalwood — are among the most beautiful in India, and the open forest structure provides excellent wildlife visibility. Bandipur is famous for its large herds of gaur (Indian bison), the world's largest wild cattle, which gather in clearings and grassland edges at dawn. The park also supports a healthy tiger and leopard population, wild elephant herds, and the critically endangered Indian pangolin.

Nitin's Tips

Experiencing Bandipur Wildlife Tour

Bandipur's relatively open dry deciduous forest is a wildlife photographer's friend — the tall teak canopy filters beautiful dappled light and the sight lines are far greater than in dense forest. Nitin works the grassland clearings and forest edges at dawn for gaur herds, which are often 20–30 animals strong and can be approached to within metres. The roads in the core zone are excellent, and the park's low tourist pressure compared to northern Indian reserves means extended, unhurried encounters. Bandipur also connects to Mudumalai and Ooty, allowing cross-state wildlife photography itineraries.
