Lake Nakuru

A lake of pink — flamingos, rhinos, and the Great Rift Valley

Overview

Why Visit

Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya's most rewarding compact wildlife parks — a jewel of the Great Rift Valley. The alkaline lake is famed for its vast flocks of lesser flamingos that turn the shoreline a vivid pink, and the park hosts one of Kenya's most dependable populations of both black and white rhino. The surrounding yellowacacia and euphoria forest harbours leopard, lion, waterbuck, and over 450 bird species. At just 188 km², the park's intimacy means extraordinary wildlife density in a small area.

Nitin's Tips

Experiencing Lake Nakuru

The flamingo spectacle at Lake Nakuru is one of the most photogenic scenes in Africa — best photographed from the southern lake shore at dawn, when the light rakes across the water and the birds are active. Nitin positions the vehicle low and close, using a wide lens to capture the sheer mass of pink against the blue Rift Valley sky. The park's rhino population — both black and white — makes for rare double-rhino opportunities within a single day. The elevated Baboon Cliff viewpoint provides a sweeping aerial perspective over the entire lake and flamingo colony.
