Entebbe — Shoebill Excursion
The prehistoric shoebill stork in the wetlands of Lake Victoria
Overview
Why Visit
The shoebill stork is one of the world's most sought-after and prehistoric-looking birds — a metre-tall grey giant with a massive bill shaped like a Dutch clog, capable of standing motionless for hours before striking at lungfish in the shallows. Mabamba Swamp on the shores of Lake Victoria, just 45 minutes from Entebbe, is one of the world's most reliable locations to photograph shoebill in the wild. The excursion is typically combined with the start or end of a Uganda safari — a half-day that delivers a truly unique and otherworldly subject for the portfolio.
Nitin's Tips
Experiencing Entebbe — Shoebill Excursion
Shoebill photography requires patience and a flat-bottomed papyrus canoe. Nitin guides the approach from the water — drifting quietly through papyrus channels until the bird is in frame at eye level, ideally with open water or morning sky behind it. The best light is in the first two hours after sunrise, when the golden rays cut through the papyrus and the bird is most active. Shoebills are famously unbothered by cameras — once located, they will often remain in position for extended periods, allowing deliberate, unhurried composition at close range.
