Serengeti
Endless plains and the world's greatest wildlife spectacle
Overview
Why Visit
The Serengeti is synonymous with the wild. Spanning 14,750 square kilometres of pristine savanna, it is the stage for the world's largest terrestrial mammal migration — over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle in perpetual motion. The Serengeti's iconic kopjes (rocky outcrops) provide perfect perches for leopards and cheetahs, while the short-grass plains of the south host extraordinary big cat densities during the calving season.
Nitin's Tips
Experiencing Serengeti
The Serengeti rewards patience. Its sheer scale means you can drive for an hour without another vehicle in sight — a freedom that is almost impossible to find in smaller reserves. The kopje rock formations are natural photography stages: leopards drape themselves across the granite in perfect morning light, and lions use the elevated perches to survey the plains, giving you eye-level shots as you approach from lower ground. During calving season (January–March), the short-grass southern plains host extraordinary predator-prey interaction — cheetah hunts play out in the open with no obstructions. For zebra photography, the Serengeti is unmatched: vast striped herds crossing golden grass at dawn create graphic, abstract compositions as powerful as any big cat encounter.
