Kabini Wildlife Tour

Elephants, tigers, and the backwaters of Karnataka

Overview

Why Visit

Kabini, on the southern edge of the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve in Karnataka, is one of South India's most atmospheric wildlife destinations. The Kabini reservoir creates a permanently water-rich landscape that attracts extraordinary concentrations of wildlife — especially Asian elephants, which gather here in some of the largest herds seen anywhere in India. Nagarhole's teak and rosewood forests conceal tigers, leopards, dholes, and gaur, while the reservoir itself hosts resident populations of mugger crocodile, otters, and an outstanding array of water birds including the rare painted stork and Asian openbill.

Nitin's Tips

Experiencing Kabini Wildlife Tour

The Kabini backwaters are uniquely photogenic — a wide, calm reservoir fringed by forest, with wildlife that regularly comes to drink and wade at the water's edge. Nitin times the boat safari for the golden hour when elephants cross and the light turns the water amber. The forest jeep safaris provide excellent leopard and tiger opportunities — Kabini's leopards are among the most frequently sighted in South India. The summer (April–June) concentration of elephants at the reservoir, when surrounding water sources dry up, creates extraordinary multi-herd gatherings of 50–100 animals.
