Uganda
Murchison Falls National Park
The world's most powerful waterfall and Uganda's greatest wildlife park
Overview
Why Visit
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest and oldest protected area — 3,840 square kilometres of savanna, riverine forest, and the mighty Nile. At the park's heart is Murchison Falls itself, where the entire flow of the Nile is forced through a seven-metre rock gorge with extraordinary force before plunging 43 metres. The park's wildlife is exceptional: large herds of elephant, buffalo, and Uganda kob roam the northern savanna, while the Nile supports hippos, Nile crocodiles, and shoebill storks. The delta at the Albert Nile is one of Africa's great wildlife spectacles.
Nitin's Tips
Experiencing Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison rewards a river-first approach. The afternoon boat cruise up the Nile to the base of the falls is the park's single greatest photographic experience: hippos, elephants, and crocodiles line the banks at eye-level from the water, while the falls backdrop every composition with mist and drama. Nitin times the cruise for the last two hours before sunset, when the riverside light goes golden and the hippo groups are at their most active. The morning game drives on the north bank deliver excellent predator sightings — lion and leopard are both resident — with the Nile always visible on the horizon as context.
