Tarangire & Lake Manyara
Ancient baobabs, vast elephant herds, and the tree-climbing lions of Manyara
Overview
Why Visit
Tarangire National Park is Tanzania's best-kept secret. During the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes the only permanent water source for miles around — drawing elephants in their hundreds, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and the predators that follow them, into a landscape of ancient baobab trees that are themselves a photographic subject. Some individual baobabs here are over a thousand years old. Lake Manyara, a short drive away, is famous for its tree-climbing lions — a unique learned behaviour found almost nowhere else — as well as flamingo-lined shores and the dense groundwater forest at the park entrance that creates a completely different photographic palette from the open savanna.
Nitin's Tips
Experiencing Tarangire & Lake Manyara
Tarangire is the elephant photographer's Tanzania equivalent of Amboseli — but with baobabs. The combination of vast elephant herds moving through a landscape of extraordinary ancient trees, particularly in the late dry season (August–October), creates compositions of a kind that simply do not exist elsewhere in East Africa. Nitin focuses on the relationship between elephants and the landscape — the scale of a herd beneath a thousand-year-old baobab, the texture of ancient bark against grey elephant hide, the dust catching golden light as hundreds of feet move through dry earth. Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions require patience — they often rest in the fever trees along the lake edge for hours, and positioning correctly for an eye-level shot between branches takes time and the right vehicle placement.
