Kaziranga Wildlife Tour

The last stronghold of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros

Overview

Why Visit

Kaziranga National Park in Assam, northeast India, is one of the great conservation success stories of the 20th century. Home to the world's largest population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros — over 2,600 animals — and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it sits on the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River at the foot of the Eastern Himalayas. Beyond the rhino, Kaziranga harbours the highest density of Royal Bengal tigers of any park in India, along with wild water buffalo, swamp deer, Asian elephant, and over 478 bird species. The tall elephant grass of the floodplain creates dramatic landscapes for wildlife photography.

Nitin's Tips

Experiencing Kaziranga Wildlife Tour

Kaziranga's open grasslands and rhinos make it fundamentally different from India's forest tiger reserves — the wildlife is visible, approachable, and immense. Nitin works the early morning jeep safaris when rhinos are grazing in the open grassland, backlit by the low Assam light. Elephant-back photography — unique to Kaziranga — allows access into tall grass where jeeps cannot reach, offering intimate rhino encounters from above. The park's four zones each offer different landscapes: Kohora for rhino concentrations, Burapahar for elephant herds, Agoratoli for swamp deer.
