Zanzibar
Tropical paradise, confluence of cultures, archive of a remarkable history
Overview
Why Visit
Zanzibar is unlike anywhere else in East Africa. The Zanzibar Archipelago off the Tanzanian coast has been a crossroads of trade routes since the first century — Arab, Persian, Indian, and European merchants brought their cultures, faiths, and aesthetics, and they all survive in the stone and spice of Zanzibar City. Stone Town, its historic heart, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a labyrinth of narrow alleys, elaborately carved doors, coral-stone mansions, and the lingering scent of cloves. Beyond the city, the island's northern tip offers white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, and some of the finest sunrises and sunsets in the Indian Ocean world.
Nitin's Tips
Experiencing Zanzibar
Zanzibar offers a completely different photographic palette to the mainland safaris — and it rewards the patient, observant eye. Stone Town is extraordinary in the first hour of morning light, when the sun angles low through the alleys and catches the carved doorways before the crowds arrive. The doors are a subject in themselves: each one is unique, combining Hindu motifs, Koranic inscriptions, Persian geometry, and Gujarati haveli style. The Nungwi sunrise is best shot from the eastern side of the village — a 30-minute walk in the dark — where the Indian Ocean horizon is clean and the light builds from deep purple to blazing gold. For seascapes, the traditional dhow fishing boats return to shore in early morning, providing natural silhouettes and foreground interest. Cheetah's Rock sanctuary allows close-range wildlife portraits in a tropical setting — a very different context for big cat photography.
