Uganda
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Tree-climbing lions, hippo channels, and the Albertine Rift
Overview
Why Visit
Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda's most visited wildlife destination — a diverse mosaic of savanna, wetland, tropical forest, and the crater lakes of the Albertine Rift. The park is most famous for its tree-climbing lions, a unique population in the Ishasha sector that habitually rest and survey their territory from the branches of giant fig trees. The Kazinga Channel, connecting Lakes George and Edward, supports one of Africa's highest concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles, and the boat safari along the channel delivers extraordinary riverside wildlife encounters.
Nitin's Tips
Experiencing Queen Elizabeth National Park
Tree-climbing lions are the photographic centrepiece of Queen Elizabeth — an entirely different compositional challenge from ground-level lion photography. Nitin positions the vehicle to put the lions at eye-level in the branches, with the fig tree canopy framing the composition. The Ishasha sector is a half-day drive from the main park, so Nitin builds the itinerary to arrive at Ishasha in the late afternoon when the lions are most likely to be elevated and the light is warm. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise, like Murchison's river safari, delivers outstanding hippo and elephant photography from the water.
