Masai Mara

Where the Great Migration meets the golden savanna

Overview

Why Visit

The Masai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated wildlife reserve — a vast, open ecosystem of rolling grasslands, acacia woodland, and the winding Mara River. Home to Africa's densest concentration of big cats, the Mara offers photographers unparalleled access to lions, leopards, and cheetahs against dramatic open backdrops. From July to October, the Great Wildebeest Migration sweeps through, delivering one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on earth.

Nitin's Tips

Experiencing Masai Mara

The Mara is a photographer's dream because of its open terrain. There is nowhere for animals to hide — you get clean sight lines, uncluttered backgrounds, and long golden-hour windows. The savanna grass turns amber at dawn, wrapping every subject in warm, directional light. During the Migration, Nitin positions the vehicle on the Mara River bank well before crossings begin — sometimes two hours early — so you have the best angle when the wildebeest finally commit. Outside Migration season, the Mara's resident big cats are among the most habituated in Africa: lions will walk past within metres of the vehicle.
