Samburu

The Samburu Special Five and the wild northern frontier

Overview

Why Visit

Samburu National Reserve sits in Kenya's remote and rugged northern frontier — a semi-arid landscape of doum palms, acacia scrub, and the winding Ewaso Ng'iro River. The reserve is celebrated for the 'Samburu Special Five': the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk — species found here but not in Kenya's southern parks. The riverside forest holds leopard and lion, while the dry riverbeds draw large elephant herds. Samburu's remoteness means fewer vehicles and a wilder, more frontier atmosphere than the Mara.

Nitin's Tips

Experiencing Samburu

Samburu offers a completely different photographic palette from southern Kenya. The landscape is drier, more sculptural — flat-topped acacias, volcanic rock, and the deep ochre of the northern earth. The reticulated giraffe's geometric markings photograph beautifully against this graphic backdrop. Grevy's zebra — far rarer than the common plains zebra — have bolder, more closely-spaced stripes and a more donkey-like face: a genuinely different subject for the portfolio. The Ewaso Ng'iro River is the reserve's lifeline — elephants, leopard, and crocodile congregate along its banks and Nitin times game drives to coincide with peak activity at the river.
