Overview
About This Tour
A 5-day immersion in one of the Indian Ocean's most extraordinary islands — Zanzibar. This excursion combines the historic depths of Stone Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with the pristinely white beaches of Nungwi on the island's northern tip. You will photograph the carved doors and sun-drenched alleyways of Stone Town, visit Prison Island's 100-year-old giant tortoises, experience wildlife at Cheetah's Rock sanctuary, and end each evening watching the Indian Ocean turn gold. Nitin guides not just the logistics but the photographic eye — the light angles on coral-stone walls, the geometry of carved doorways, the silhouettes of dhows against a painted sky.
Day by Day
Arrival in Zanzibar — Stone Town
Fly from Nairobi (Kenya Airways KQ 494, 1h 20min) to Zanzibar International Airport. Transfer to Stone Town and check into Mizingani Seafront Hotel or Tembo House — a 2-minute walk from the Sultan's Palace. Evening walk along the seafront and visit to Forodhani Park night food market.
📷 Forodhani Park at dusk — open-air grills, lantern light, the old fort silhouetted against a warm sky. Long exposure and street photography.
Stone Town Walking Tour & Prison Island
After breakfast, a half-day guided walk through Old Stone Town: the Darajani Market, former slave chambers, Sultan's Palace, and the House of Wonders (East Africa's first building with electricity and an elevator). Lunch in Stone Town. At 15:00, a 20-minute boat ride to Prison Island — home to a sanctuary of Aldabra giant tortoises over 100 years old. Swim, hike the trails, and photograph the tortoises before returning to Stone Town for dinner.
📷 Stone Town's elaborately carved doors — each a unique motif of Hindu, Arabic, and Swahili influence. Giant tortoises at close range in dappled tropical light.
Cheetah's Rock Wildlife Sanctuary — Nungwi Beach
Early breakfast and check out. Drive 30 minutes to Cheetah's Rock for a 3-hour wildlife experience — meeting cheetahs, zebras, and other animals up close while learning about conservation and ethical wildlife practices. Then drive to Nungwi, the island's northernmost tip, for lunch. Afternoon on the beach — swimming or walking the shoreline. Sunset cruise on the Indian Ocean, 4:30–6:30pm. Dinner and overnight at Nungwi Dreams by Mantis or equivalent 4-star hotel.
📷 Cheetah portraits at very close range in tropical surroundings — completely different to the open savanna. Sunset cruise: dhow silhouettes, golden ocean, dramatic skies.
Indian Ocean Sunrise — Free Day at Nungwi
Wake at 5:00am and walk 30 minutes across the village to the eastern side of the island to photograph the sunrise over the Indian Ocean at 6:00am. Return to the hotel for breakfast. The rest of the day is unstructured — swim, walk Kendwa beach, snorkel (optional, not included), or simply photograph the dhow fishermen returning with their catch.
📷 Sunrise over the Indian Ocean — colour gradients from deep indigo to blazing orange, silhouetted palm trees. Dhow fishing boats in early morning light.
Return to Stone Town — Departure
Check out after breakfast and drive to Stone Town (1.5–2 hours). Time for last-minute shopping and exploration. Lunch at Le Macis restaurant — Zanzibari and international cuisine. Transfer to Zanzibar International Airport (40 minutes), arriving by 15:00 for check-in. Tour ends here.
📷 Final light on Stone Town's coral-stone streets in the morning — this is when the golden hour hits the carved doorways perfectly before tourists arrive.
